[Bug 118667] Re: xorg consumes a huge amount of memory

2007-06-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
Btw, another tool that can be useful in tracing memory behavior on X is
`xrestop`.

[Bug 118667] Re: xorg consumes a huge amount of memory

2007-06-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
Looking at my own system running GNOME and Xinerama on a radeon with
Feisty loaded, it's using 274mb virtual memory at an uptime of 14 days.

Remember this is virtual memory. If it was using 400mb RAM and you only
had, say 1gb, then this would be a worry, but if you have a lot of swap
space allocated for your system, then I wouldn't be surprised to see
certain apps like X using large amounts of it.

The important thing is if it is leaking. Does your system remain stable
at around 400mb or does it grow until it consumes a larger proportion of
available memory? If so, then it is definitely a bug needing to be
explored. If you're interested in further investigation of memory
issues with X and other applications, a useful tool to learn is
Valgrind.

Since this appears to be normal behavior, I'm going to close this.
However, if you do discover a leak or other bad behavior, please feel
free to reopen (or open a new bug).

I don't think 400 mb is normal, normal should be between 50-100. I'm
assigning this to the xorg package.

If Xorg using ~400MB of (swapped) memory is normal with default Feisty
configuration, then this is normal behaviour.

Thank you for your report. Is this still a bug or a normal behaviour ?

'lo Loye

Thanks. I'm used to the ion windowmanager, maybe that's why this looks like too
much to me.
I don't have run KDE, so don't have KSysGuard.

[Bug 118667] Re: xorg consumes a huge amount of memory

2007-06-04 Thread Loye Young
1. Most of the memory you are seeing in the top line you posted is shared,
cached and/or buffered, so it's working the way it's supposed to do.
2. Graphical user interfaces use memory. MSWindows of most any variety uses
much more than X does. It's one reason why Linux and Unix gurus didn't bother
with a desktop interface until recently. Some of the die-hards still don't like
the GUI. I myself am trying to learn my way around the command line so I don't
have to use an X server on some of my machines. I'm starting to get the hang of
it, but the GUI is still very useful.
3. "make this report more useful" -- Use Performance Monitor (KSysGuard). It's
in your K Menu >> Utilities >> Performance Monitor.

Happy Trails,
