Please attach a copy of your /boot/grub/menu.lst file to the bug report.
(edit out any passwords if you use that option)

Looks like this is something we'll just have to deal with - not very user 
friendly though

I think it's possible to add (extra) default boot options in
/boot/grub/menu.lst for both the normal boot and recovery mode. Thus,
when a new kernel is installed and menu.lst gets updated, these default
boot options are added to all Ubuntu entries automatically and you
shouldn't have any problem. Please try and see if this fixes your
problem.

This was broken again during upgrade to 2.6.16 from 2.6.15
f you can't edit grub on boot effectively locked out of system
