2007-06-29 Thread Freddy Martinez
Greg, can you please post the output of lspci (run in in a terminal). I
would suggest using only the packages in the ubuntu repository. sorry
for the delay, thanks for your bug report and patience.

[Bug 121597] Re: Feisty Fawn - GeForce 7900 - no sound

2007-06-21 Thread kiwman

** Description changed:

  Hello everyone :-)

If anyone can provide some piece of advice on this, I'd be more than
  grateful:

I have a Toshiba Satellite P100-347 with as a Graphic Card an Nvidia GeForce
7900.
I installed Feisty Fawn (Kubuntu) on dual boot as I am a newB, and was very
happy with the internet connection but not as much with the sound: I just can't
hear anything.

Using different Plugins and packages to allow MP3 being readen by Amarok,
Totem, VCL...
I did however not manage to get any sound.

I guess the driver of the Graphic card does not work properly.
Nvidia does not provide drivers for Ubuntu on their websites, as far as I
know.

- What I noticed using Ubuntu's resticted Driver Manager,
+ What I noticed using Ubuntu's Hardware Information,
is that the Graphic card has been found as being indeed a GeForce 7900,
but Kubuntu does not realise it is a Graphic Card: Device is marked as
unknown

Let me again praise the work of Ubuntu developers:
For what I already have: Thanks a LOT ;-) !!!
if you can get me the sound to work,
I'll definitely make my way to engage in the open source community.

  yours Faithfully,

  Greg kiwmann.

What is your audio device name. You are describing your video card,
which does not handle sound.

Thank you for your reply Freddy ! :-)

Did you mean the following ?

supported audio format : 16-bit stereo
supported sound standards : MIDI support
speakers : built-in Harman Kardon® stereo speakers
manufacturer : Toshiba Bass Enhanced Sound System with SRS® TruSurround XT™
technology

This is all I found concerning my Audio hardware.
Please let me know if I am getting closer to what you meant :)

yours,
Greg.

(PS: just in case this could help, I add information about the hardware
from the manufacturer's website: http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com

[Bug 121597] Re: Feisty Fawn - GeForce 7900 - no sound

2007-06-21 Thread kiwman
Dear Freddy,

looking at some bugs reported on recent Nvidia Graphic Cards and Ubuntu Feisty
Fawn,
[perhaps these people have similar problems:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/110657
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/110395

I think I found some other users of Ubuntu having no sound.

They suggested the following software:
http://www.albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

As this is not part of the Ubuntu official update,
I am feeling suspicious concerning the program to install.
Do you think this could solve the problem without taking any security risk ?

thank you,

Greg.
