[Bug 1228161] Re: Graphics Adaptor Change fails then works then fails then ...
Daniel, Unfortunately it looks like the correction has had a very short lifespan. I logged in normally this morning and after perhaps 10 minutes of normal functionality, the screen went blank and all disk activity stopped. I have since then tried numerous methods to get the system back up but perhaps 8 out of ten attempts stop somewhere along the line, while a couple seem to start normally, but then abruptly go to a blank screen colored in various hues of the color scheme of my selected theme. Even the system boot screens sometimes come up wildly distorted. Only a cold boot enabled by pulling the power plug has a chance of working albeit briefly. So, I've been able to get into various recovery screens and have managed to save off most of my project data to an archive hard disk and will now set about installing a new system. Normally this would be pretty straight forward, but seemingly not this time around. There's always something new to learn, so it looks like class is now in session. [Bug 1228161] Re: Graphics Adaptor Change fails then works then fails then ...
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Depending on how you look at it, this may or may not be considered a bug. The problem developed immediately after replacing my graphics adaptor because upgrading to Ubuntu 13.04 failed stating there was a problem with my video. What happens is a bit strange because the problem is self correcting but fails after restarting for reasons that are unclear - to me at least. I think perhaps the system recognizes that it is having problems when it first comes up and then cycles through alternative configurations until it finds one that works; and when I say works, it works perfectly. The scenario is as follows: 1. I start the day by booting up the cold system. It comes up with a screen that though largely correct, is rapidly fluttering back and forth, but no so badly that I can't log in. However logging in then brings up a blank gray screen that is also rapidly fluttering. 2. I then toggle my monitor, keyboard and mouse to my MS Windows 8 box and check email, the news, etc., and after awhile switch back to my fluttering Ubuntu box, still with a fluttering blank gray screen. I then do a hardware reset and switch back to my MS Windows Box and browse the news more in depth this time. Finally after awhile, I switch back to my Ubuntu box and find the screen now is no longer fluttering with my login screen. I login and everything continues to work perfectly. 3. The next day, I start at step 1 again because try as I might, I can't find out how to save the working configuration. There is no Xorg.conf file other than older ones with various suffixes: drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Oct 22 2012 app-defaults drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Apr 17 09:28 cursors -rw-r--r-- 1 root root18 Feb 18 2013 default-display-manager drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Oct 27 2009 fonts -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 17394 Jun 22 2009 rgb.txt lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root13 Nov 1 2009 X - /usr/bin/Xorg drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Aug 24 2012 xinit drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Feb 10 2011 xkb -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 269 May 10 2010 xorg.conf-backup-100510190140 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 269 May 10 2010 xorg.conf.dist-upgrade-201005101857 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 270 May 10 2010 xorg.conf.failsafe -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 709 Apr 1 2010 Xreset drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jan 17 2013 Xreset.d drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jan 17 2013 Xresources -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3730 Jun 24 2008 Xsession drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jul 4 18:40 Xsession.d -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 265 Jun 24 2008 Xsession.options -rw-r--r-- 1 root root13 Aug 24 2009 XvMCConfig -rw--- 1 root root 601 Oct 27 2009 Xwrapper.config The default-display-manager contains: /usr/sbin/lightdm and /usr/bin/Xorg is some sort of ELF file. Most of the fixes I've found are ones that update xorg.conf but since a system wide search has not located a xorg.conf file, presumably something else is being used. My hardware according to the Asus box is: HD 6450 SILENT/DI/1GD3(LP) the Part No.: 90-C1CQ0F-L0AANAYZ and the serial number: D4C0YZ239187 The lspci command nets out to: 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Caicos [Radeon HD 6450/7450/8450] Presumably this will net out to some sort of reconfiguration, or more likely a means to save the currently working configuration (I am, by the way, reporting this bug on the failing box after a number of reboots and hardware resets before finally arriving at the now perfectly operational screen). Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. If any additional information is needed, let me know and I'll provide it as needed. I've tried to pare down much of the data I've gathered to provide that which I thought to be most meaningful. Sorry, I forgot apport is not so advance with Ubuntu 12.04 (but you shouldn't run it with sudo at any rate) :\ You may want to consider upgrading to the lts-raring graphics stack: sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-lts-raring linux-generic-lts-raring ** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) = xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1228161 Title: Graphics Adaptor Change fails then works then fails then ... [Bug 1228161] Re: Graphics Adaptor Change fails then works then fails then ...
Daniel, Many thanks, I ran your suggested: sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-lts-raring linux-generic-lts-raring installation; took the system all the way down and then booted up from a cold start and everything now seems to be working normally. You're welcome. Marking 'Invalid' since it was more of a support request. If you have problems with the new kernel/X, please file a new bug. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1228161 Title: Graphics Adaptor Change fails then works then fails then ... /var/log/Xorg.0.log may be helpful. Please run this command: apport-collect 1228161 Note that I'm switching the package to xorg for now because you don't explicitly say you're using the open source driver (and it will make apport-collect gather more pertinent info). ** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) = xorg (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1228161 Title: Graphics Adaptor Change fails then works then fails then ...
