v31.5.0 on Mageia 4 (updated as of today). I dont know if this is the same thing but Trying to edit the dictionary. Some words that are obviously wrong in the composition being checked but are not flagged as "wrong" by the spell checker - suggesting that the bad spelling got into the dictionary. But opening the dictionary doesnt reveal these words... and in particular one word that is now never flagged up as wrong but is also not (erroenously) in the dictionary is "teh" (meaning that I have to do a search-and-replace of "teh" to "the") struggling to get anything more defintive from the symptom and I'm nowhere near a diagnosis - but this did start quite promptly on instaling 31.5.0 - just upgraded to a new machine (old one had several vesions back) and this started when the updates were finally all in during the machine build - btw on the verison that came in with the Mageia 4 distro this appeared not to manifest. This bug is about a fault in TB v 24 which was fixed in 24.0.1. The error was that inline spell-checking didn't not work at all. The effect that you're observing is a different bug that I have reported in bug 1100966. TB is by far the most awesome email client I've ever used but this has got to be the single most annoying aspect of the WHOLE program. Instead of typing away on a long email without breaking my thought AND THEN going back to check if there are any spellings flagged; I instead have to stop as soon as one is flagged and correct it. If I don't, then the "flagging" goes away and then I don't remember which words I had misspelled. You would think something like this would be elementary but apparently not because I've been dealing with this for years. I don't think that this is an ubuntu specific issue but perhaps the TB package. I am on SuSE 12.3 and this was working fine until I upgraded to 24.0. Yes, Darko Veberic is right - it works first few messages after TB restart. Today I needed and installed Enigmail plugin for TB and VOILA - spell check as you type is back! This bug has a serious impact on the usability of Thunderbird. Public bug reported: After installing the 1:24.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 (precise-updates) update to Mozilla Thunderbird on 12.04, the "Spell check as you type" feature no longer works. Downgrading to 11.0.1+build1-0ubuntu2 (precise) restores the functionality. Steps to reproduce: * Open a new message. * Verify "Options->Spell Check As You Type" is selected * Type something like "check my spleling please" in the body of the message Expected Result: * spleling should be underlined in red and when right-clicked offer correction options Actual Result: * No words are underlined to indicate mispellings were found. Right-clicking on "spleling" shows the standard context menu. Toggling the spell check as you type option has no effect. Click the "Spelling" button, however, does lauch the spell checker and identify the mispelled word.
