[Bug 1236653] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad T420] Graphics performance reduced after playing games for a little bit
I have the same problem. Notebook: Lenovo T420, Intel HD Graphics 3000 After starting Ubuntu everything works fine. If I use Google Maps in Chromium/Firefox or working some time with LibreOffice the graphic begins to stutter. Even if I only move a window for one end of the screen to the other it jerky (anything but smoothly). Yesterday I updated the BIOS to 2013-07-05 (latest version) but it did not help. The only thing that helps is a reboot. Please let me know if you need more information. shuhao, as per http://download.lenovo.com/express/ddfm.html an update is available for your BIOS (1.46). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command: sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. A hang in the bsd can't be a mesa issue. Also since it's inside the batch it's not one of the known kernel issues. Fixed in Mesa 9.2.3 (out today), the upcoming Mesa 10.0 release, or Mesa master. This fixes the Sandybridge-specific GPU hang where i915_error_state (aka /sys/class/drm/card0/error) lists an IPEHR of 0x79050005. [Bug 1236653]
Sorry to re-open but I wanted to include one more detail - either a recent update fixed this for me, or a recent change I made to my BIOS settings (changing my fan speed from "normal" to "turbo" in my motherboard BIOS) has made me unable to reproduce this hang, even after long periods of scrolling complex maps in Google Maps. I can definitely raise the temperature nearly 10C by doing this, but with the fans on turbo (and this only seems to make it slightly louder) the hang does not occur. Hopefully this will help anyone else with these issues - always try to cool the processor as much as possible! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1236653 Title: Graphics performance reduced after playing games for a little bit To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/1236653/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1236653] Re: Graphics performance reduced after playing games for a little bit
So I think I have an idea of what is happening.. Here's my sensors output: acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1:+56.0°C (crit = +98.0°C) thinkpad-isa- Adapter: ISA adapter fan1:1978 RPM coretemp-isa- Adapter: ISA adapter Physical id 0: +57.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 0: +50.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 1: +53.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) pkg-temp-0-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1:+57.0°C The "high" temperature is at 86C. I notice the performance drop at around 87C. (Still need to try to reproduce it again...) The CPU clock frequency is not modified at 87C. The characteristics of the performance drop is consistent with a lowered "Clock modulation", something I've seen in programs that controls the CPU on windows. Now this did not happen on a previous version of Linux. Previously when I hit about 95C (which apparently is quite common for these laptops after about 1-2 years of usage), the CPU frequency will be restricted to 800MHz, which would be the lowest frequency available. So I'm not exactly sure what the best fix for this would be, or where the "regression" happened. While 95C does not seem like a good idea, it is actually quite easy, at least for me, to hit 87C on these thinkpads, even after cleaning it out, replacing the thermal paste (multiple times with no difference in results), and so forth. I will try to get myself a fan mat and see if that helps things sometime soon and confirm that this is indeed the issue. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1236653 Title: Graphics performance reduced after playing games for a little bit To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1236653/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1236653] Re: Graphics performance reduced after playing games for a little bit
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.12 kernel[0]. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'. If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'. Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed". Thanks in advance. [Bug 1236653] [NEW] Graphics performance reduced after playing games for a little bit
Public bug reported: I recently upgraded to Saucy. I noticed that everytime I play something like Counter Strike Source, my graphics performance drops down to something like 15fps while normally it is locked at a max FPS of 40fps.. This slowdown happens and also makes my computer generally pretty slow. Thermo maximum has not been tripped (I know, and I actually underclock while playing these games). I'm not sure why this is happening. It only happens on 13.10. I have bumblebee installed. I used both cards to play the game and the same thing happens ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 13.10 Package: linux-image-3.11.0-11-generic 3.11.0-11.17 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.11.0-11.17-generic 3.11.3 Uname: Linux 3.11.0-11-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.12.5-0ubuntu1 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USERPID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC0: shuhao 2611 F pulseaudio shuhao 4063 F plugin-containe /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p: shuhao 4063 F...m plugin-containe /dev/snd/timer: shuhao 4063 f plugin-containe Date: Mon Oct 7 20:39:17 2013 HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=0c4e9477-6a74-48cb-a0e4-37bc3251580e InstallationDate: Installed on 2013-07-08 (91 days ago) InstallationMedia: Xubuntu 13.04 "Raring Ringtail" - Release amd64 (20130423.1) MachineType: LENOVO 4180J4C MarkForUpload: True ProcFB: 0 inteldrmfb ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-3.11.0-11-generic root=/dev/mapper/xubuntu--vg-root ro quiet splash i915.modeset=1 i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1 PulseList: Error: command ['pacmd', 'list'] failed with exit code 1: Failed to create secure directory (/run/user/1000/pulse): Permission denied No PulseAudio daemon running, or not running as session daemon.
