Same here [Linux localhost 3.13.0-24-generic]. I am attaching screenshot of my laptop desktop. No second monitor is connected. Screen on the right is 'Unknown screen'. I have exactly same problem on my other laptop. I am not sure if this is the same problem or not. I have a similar issue. I opened a Bug #1296020 for ubuntu 14.04 trusty. This is critical to me. I can NOT use gdm and gnome-shell at all because of this bug. gdm failed to start because of this. gnome-shell shows a black (off) screen. A workaround is to go to System Settings then to Screen Display. You'll see a screen labeled Unknown Display. Click on this and you'll see that the On/Off 'switch' below will now show On. Click it to Off and the effects of the Unknown Screen will go away. I have a notebook with an external 24 monitor and the effects for me were - 1. The Desktop pics was duplicated in the top LH corner of my ext monitor screen with it's own Launcher (I fixed the separate launcher by setting Launcher placement to only the ext monitor but couldn't get rid of the dupe desktop pic) 2. I can confirm this bug is still alive and well. I'm experiencing it both on Ubuntu 13.10 and 14.04. I'm attaching my results from xrandr on 14.04*. I only have this issue when I'm using the nouveau driver.
