I am not sure if this is the same problem or not. I have a similar
issue. I opened a Bug #1296020 for ubuntu 14.04 trusty. This is critical
to me. I can NOT use gdm and gnome-shell at all because of this bug. gdm
failed to start because of this. gnome-shell shows a black (off) screen.
I haven't tried unity yet.

[Bug 1244827] Re: [13.10] Ubuntu detects a non-existing screen

2014-02-15 Thread Peter Mainstone-Mitchell
A workaround is to go to System Settings then to Screen Display.

You'll see a screen labeled Unknown Display.

Click on this and you'll see that the On/Off 'switch' below will now
show On.

Click it to Off and the effects of the Unknown Screen will go away.

I have a notebook with an external 24 monitor and the effects for me
were -

1. The Desktop pics was duplicated in the top LH corner of my ext
monitor screen with it's own Launcher (I fixed the separate launcher by
setting Launcher placement to only the ext monitor but couldn't get rid
of the dupe desktop pic)

2. The mouse kept flickering

I can confirm this bug is still alive and well. I'm experiencing it both
on Ubuntu 13.10 and 14.04.

I'm attaching my results from xrandr on 14.04*.

Perhaps worth noticing, I've had no success disabling the unknown
display with the solution posted here

in-13-10/365017#365017

*In an effort to solve what I think is related problems with my HDMI port, I've
decided to test the beta release so unfortunately I can't at the moment give
you 13.10 results.

2014-01-07 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Giuliano Tognarelli Buono-core, this bug was reported a while ago and
there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this
is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest
development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg-server REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is
already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one
would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.
