A. Major kudos to nrbrtx for maintaining the patched Xorg PPA - this was a life saver, and I don't believe it was mentioned enough. B. Is this still an issue? Currently - on beta focal, I am using Xorg from Ubuntu (without Norbert's PPA) on KDE Plasma 5.18, and I don't see to have this problem: I have ALT+SHIFT bound to layout change (`setxkbmap -option grp:alt_shift_toggle`), and ALT+SHIFT changes language while ALT+SHIFT+ triggers shortcut (I use Eclipse which defaults to a lot of ALT+SHIFT-* shortcuts). ! SOLUTION ! For myself I created temporary hack allowing to switch Keyboard layouts (en<->ru) by Ctrl+Shift on key release. My method does not interfere with other shortcuts. I use it myself on daily basis. It's simple Python script which listen to Ctrl+Shift key combination and switch layout on release. Hello, Putting CTRL+SHIFT as the keyboard layout change hotkey should not disable all CTRL+SHIFT+ I can confirm this bug is real and is affecting more and more people. CTRL-SHIFT used not to conflict with other keybindings. Now it does. FYI the bug may be temporarily fixed on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (with HWE), Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (and Mint 19) using packages from my PPA ( https://launchpad.net/~nrbrtx/+archive/ubuntu/xorg-hotkeys or " ppa:nrbrtx/xorg-hotkeys " ). It contains patched Xorg (with patch from kyak - https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xorg-server-bug865/ ). Thank you very much again, kyak! But there is one moment, keyboard layout still switch on key RELEASE and when I'am using CTRL+SHIFT+T my keyboard layout is changed to another and it is not good, because I doesn't expect for keyboard layout switching when I use hotkeys. Is there any change to make keyboard layout switching on key release, not key down? P.S.: Developers would be grateful to you. This patch is stable and reliable. ArchLinux users are happy with it. It fixes current bug on Ubuntu Bionic Beaver 18.04 LTS. I am running 17.10 with MATE, and this bug is still happening, I report it was working in 16.04 with Mate and after upgrading I have a working layout switcher between 2 languages but all Shift+Alt derived shortcuts specially the ones in IDEA are not working anymore User rant Well I will add my complain, This is one of those "I fell like switching back to windows" kind of bug, the kind that make you stop before recommending ubuntu to your friends and family, the one when people point it out to you, you simply lower your head and nod. This is super old and terrible for any shortcut user in a multi language setup, which are most of developers I know of. In 17.10 not even the Xorg recompile is working anymore, for some magical reason in 16.04 this was fixed maybe by Dell(I have a dell ubuntu machine) or someone else, as soon as I updated to 17.10 it appeared again. It's really infuriating to start my IDE everyday with this on. In my case, layout switcher for keyboards is working ( probably because of some of config from 16.04) but all Shift+Alt derived shortcuts specially the ones in IDEA are not. So no more fancy multi caret edit for me, or fast renaming, or line switching I am basically missing some of the the good stuff IDEA provides and was payed for because of a 10 year old bug. Clarification of my comment 58: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with MATE desktop does not affect by this bug, but 17.10 and 18.04 LTS are affected even with MATE desktop (see bug 1720364). So Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with MATE desktop is unique, here we can use Ctrl+Shift layout switcher without problems. @Roman Shchekin (mrqtros) In my systems I fixed this bug by switching to the Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS. I wrote this comment from it with Ctrl+Shift layout switcher and two layouts (English and Russian). But Ubuntu 17.10 with MATE desktop is affected by this bug (see bug 1720364). I hoped that this would not happen. I'll continue to use Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with MATE desktop. A bit if historical perspective for people who didn't bother to read all of this and #36812 comments: 1. The current behavior of the X.org server - where any shortcut starting with the shift keys used to change layout, is broken and can't be used - is (as claimed by X.org devs) a requirement of the X keyboard extension (XKB). 2. A bug report on the X.org bug tracker (at freedesktop.org) was created at 2004 with a suggested alternative behavior and was followed closely with a patch to the server code. Followed a long discussion where multiple approaches up to and including changing the standard were tried and rejected by the devs. 3. Reports were opened in many distribution-specific bug trackers with requests to carry the patches from the bug report in an out of tree. Most reports were closed as "WONTFIX". 4. On 2011-01-06 a patch was added to the Ubuntu xorg-server 1.9.0.902-1ubuntu4 package for Natty (11.04). Ubuntu was the only distribution (building X.org) that carried a patch to fix this serious issue for consumers. 5. As part of the X.org servre 1.19 release, the original patch carried by Ubuntu since Natty stopped applying cleanly on the code, and on 2017-03-27, as part of the Zesty release, the patch was dropped (this is documented in bug #1671799) - even though an updated patch that applies cleanly on X.org 1.19 was already ready on the bug 865 report. 6. Ubuntu 17.10 with MATE desktop is affected by this bug (see bug 1720364). I hoped that this would not happen. I'll continue to use Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with MATE desktop.
