Binary package hint: debian-installer
1. Boot from alternate cd.
2. Choose 16 Bit resolution (e.g. 1024 x 768 x 16) by pressing F4
3. look in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, the DefaultDepth there is 24 Bit.
This can be a real showstopper, if you install in a vm like Virtual PC
2007(VPC07), because VPC07 does NOT support 24 Bit resolutions, so X11
is unusable blurred or the screen stays even black.
