[Bug 1263469] Re: [backport-request] 12.04.4 needs a newer version of lightDM-KDE

2014-01-02 Thread Harald Sitter
From our KDM defaults in kde-workspace 4.8.5:

Key: TerminateServer
Type: bool
Default: true
User: core
Instance: #:*/!
Merge: xdm
Comment:
Restart instead of resetting the local X-Server; after session exit.
Use it if the server leaks memory etc.
Description:
Whether kdm; should restart the local X-Server; after session exit instead
of resetting it. Use this if the X-Server; leaks memory or crashes the system
 on reset attempts.

So, it appears there is no reason for using lightdm at all.

If you still feel there should be a backport please request one via the
ubuntu backports process [1]

Having taken a brief look at the buglist in KDE

https://bugs.kde.org/component-report.cgi?product=lightdm

leaves me with impression that Kubuntu 12.04 would benefit from the
situation that bugfixes would get incorporated in by an upgraded
version.

plz read on:
... This fixes only the _single_ graphics card use case ...
... (hybrid graphics won't still work without lightdm) ...

I cannot test it in full since the HWE-Stack-saucy is not completed yet.
So far it'll be necessary to logout from a running session in order to acivate
the e.g. Nvidia dGPU / Intel-iGPU, LightDM will restart the X-System
automatically. Even though I would personnaly agree to favour KDM it fails here
and we've got to use STRG+backspace.

proof of concept: http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/post/6221157/ (dated 24.

A similar test could be provided with the current Alpha-1 of 14.04 in order to
let u see the disappointing result wt KDM on a Nvidia-Hybrid Graphics System
(aka Optimus).

I am only asking for the change in order to keep the high level of
Kubuntu with the coming change as refered to in comment #1 above.

2013-12-24 Thread Harald Sitter
Let me ask this again. What are the strong reasons that make you believe
that the presently available lightdm-kde version will not fill the needs
of nvidia hybrids?

Because if your concern is quality then you really should not be
requesting that lightdm-kde gets a backport but instead the default DM
used in 12.04 should grow support for whatever is necessary.

This is not what the changelog says?
kdm users are not forced to install lightdm now that nvidia depends
on nvidia-prime.

Also this doesn't explain how lightdm-kde would be insufficient to use
for hybrid setups. If I recall correctly lightdm-kde was fully
functional in 12.04, a bit rough around the edges, then again so is
using a hybrid setup in general.

I have strong reason to believe

Please elaborate.

Also since lightdm is not the default DM of 12.04 I doubt we would want
to invest time in this.

2013-12-22 Thread Flames_in_Paradise
O.K.

If you don't mind having a brief look a bug #1262068 (status:fix-released)
Title: nvidia-prime should support gdm also

In special comment #4 there, which describes the fix:

 nvidia-prime (0.5.2) trusty; urgency=low

  * debian/control:
   - Add an alternative dependency on gdm and kdm
so that gdm or kdm users are not forced to install
lightdm now that nvidia depends on nvidia-prime.
This fixes only the single graphics card use case
(hybrid graphics won't still work without lightdm)
but it's a step in the right direction (LP: #1262068)

An Optimus driven Laptop will then automatically demand for LightDM,
since it will become an dependency in 12.04.4
