That does seem to have fixed it. I can now shut down, although there is
a wierd thing where the screen goes black halfway through shutdown, with
just a blinking cursor in the top left. after a while, it continues to
shutdown, with the normal kubuntu artwork. The problem may be unrelated.
I'll stick with intel (as opposed to i810), and post again if something
happens.

I've switch back to i810, which doesn't have the problem for me, but has
the Badalloc video problem, which makes playing video in X impossible. I
need to shut down more than I need to watch video though.
