So, to my understanding MST is not supported meaning that multiple (DP) connected monitors will become mirrored. However, it seems like also the DVI output is mirrored - is this expected? I am running Ubuntu 14.04 (i.e. 3.13.0-24-generic) on a T440p attached to an ultra dock (firmware 2.17), and attaching one DP monitor works flawlessly together with the builtin display. [Bug 1275794] Re: Lenovo T440s freezes when connected to docking station
I confirm this behaviour: with the dock firmware update (T440s in a ProDock for me), I can use external displays. I can have two external displays (two 1680x1050), one on HDMI port, an another on VGA port. In normal mode, the two external displays are mirrored. But I can put them in extended desktop mode and have something like one 3360x1050 display. I'd preffer have two distinct displays, because today it's difficult to manage the windows size of the graphic applications (in particular, the automatic resize facility when you push the window to the bottom/top/left/right on in the corner). So, I expect an evolution. Nevertheless, the good news is that I can use 3 displays in the same time: the internal one and the two externals. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1275794 Title: Lenovo T440s freezes when connected to docking station To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/1275794/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Jani, my earlier comment was a false alarm. My apologies. I confirm that your patches work very well for my T440s with an Ultra Dock (firmware not updated). I tested with following two scenarios: 1. Booting while docked and then using xrandr to split the display. 2. Booting undocked and then dock and use xrandr to split the display. The changes worked well for both scenarios, albeit some minor delay which is very much acceptable. As mentioned by Tso earlier, there were some "*ERROR* too many retries, giving up" messages. Here are the dmesg outputs for the above two scenarios. https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=93971 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=93972 This bug may now be closed. I have a W540 that also freezes when trying to use DP, with the difference that I don't see any oops or error message in neither the kernel logs, nor the X logs. When I plug in an external monitor, xranrd shows it as connected to DP2, regardless of whether it's connected to DP1, DP2, DVI or HDMI. On one occasion, I have been able to get a mirror output on both DP1 and DP2 (still after 1-2 min of freezing), even though xrandr still showed only DP2 as being connected. I have been unable to reproduce that partial success since. I tried applying the patch ([PATCH]HDMI connection via dock works with some (random) delay: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=93653) against a 3.13 kernel, and it makes things **worse** on my T540p. With the 3.13 kernel w/o the patch, I can boot and start up the X server w/o problems, as long as it is not docked. With this patch, the system locks up very early in the boot process, as soon as the console switches from the compat VGA mode into the higher resolution console mode). Also, when comparing an unpatched 3.12 kernel with an unpatched 3.13 kernel, 3.13 is also worse with the T540p. With the unpatched 3.12 kernel, I can have the laptop in the dock, and so long as there are no external monditors hooked up via the dock video connectors, it worked fine. With the unpatched 3.13 kernel, it's fine outside of the dock, but if it is in the dock, even if the dock does not have any external video monitors hooked up, any time there is any change to the video setup (i.e., X server starts up, DPMS puts the monitor to sleep, etc.) the system will lock up. It will recover after I eject the laptop from the dock, and after that point I can redock it, but while the system is locked up, the laptop heats up and the fan starts up --- which I suspect means that we are indeed hanging in some spinlock.

Lenovo has released a firmware update for the docking station. Please see: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T540p-T440p-UltraDock-external-display-issues/td-p/1368847/highlight/true/page/14 Firmware update: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/options/fwdphb01.exe Unfortunately, there is no version for Linux. So you have to run Windows to update the firmware. Is someone here running a dual boot environment who could give it a try? [Bug 1275794]
I have exactly the same issue on Ubuntu 14.04 with an T440s which makes its display connection via the docking stations Display Port. After I patched the Kernel with Stefan Agners link-train-delay.patch and now it works reasonably well, the time it takes to make the display connection for me is about 10 seconds at max, which is acceptable for me. However, I don't think this solution is perfect, so I added a few dollars to the bounty and hope some working patch makes it upstream.

At FOSDEM Jesse Barnes gave a talk "Intel BayTrail graphics overview", on one slide he mentioned an "external DP" bug they've fixed. [Bug 1275794] Re: Lenovo T440s freezes when connected to docking station
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.13 kernel[0]. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'. If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'. Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed". Thanks in advance. [Bug 1275794] Re: Lenovo T440s freezes when connected to docking station
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode. To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1275794/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package. [This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.] ** Tags added: bot-comment -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1275794 Title: Lenovo T440s freezes when connected to docking station To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1275794/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
