@Pablo,

The 'wapf=4' parameter is applicable ONLY to 'asus-nb-wmi' driver. What
you have created will simply be ignored as this parameter does not exist
for rtlwifi driver.

[Bug 1277959] Re: [Asus 1015E] Fn+F2 is not working for activating/deactivating wifi

2014-07-18 Thread varunendra
@Ant,

Your model does not use the asus_nb_wmi driver which the bug is about,
so your problem is not related to this particular bug, nor is the
workaround for you. Blindly applying patches/workarounds not meant for
your model would only make the problem worse.

If you have a thread on the problem on ubuntuforums.org, please give me
its link so I can try what we can. If not, and the problem still exists,
I suggest you do that now - post a thread on ubuntuforums.org and give
me its link (posting it here or via PM on ubuntuforums).

PS:
Based on confirmations in comment #22 here, and comment #59 in the related bug
#1173681 , I have edited the ubuntuforums post
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2181558) to change the wapf value
from 1 to 4, and added the request to post the command output for model number.

Still unsure though why it broke on models on which there was no problem
with older kernels. As long as that remains unexplained and the Fn+F2
unfixed, this will still remain a 'Workaround', not a fix.

But thanks to you, Hans, for at least patching the code for reported
models to make them work out of box, and not requiring to apply the
workaround manually.

It'd be a delightful day when the real culprit is found and the 'real'
fix is released, so that the Fn+F2 issue is fixed too.

Tested with Atheros and Broadcom ( ...mpcie internal wireless controller
)

kubuntu 12.04, 12.10 (ver = kernel-3.5) wifi enabled/disabled - OK.
Update to kubuntu 14.04. Wireless on/off switch - RIP...

Set wapf flag not help:
a) asus_nb_wmi - never load.
b) set (edit/rebuild asus-wmi.c ) wapf values 0,1,4 in asus_wmi - do nothing
expected and positive.

Code in linux/drivers/platform/x86/asus-wmi.c ( line with
asus-driver-wlan_ctrl_by_user = 1; )
was added after kernel ver. 3.5 (?) and damage switch - rfkill Hard blocked:
yes / Hard blocked: no

Fix tested with kernel 3.13.0-30 ( as I hope nondestructive for other
models requested wlan_ctrl_by_user ) attached in archive.

folder: test debug – just logs and source asus-wmi.c with extended trace
info

folder: fix_eeepc_wlan_switch

Modified asus-wmi.c ( original ….linux/drivers/platform/x86/asus-wmi.c )

Config asus_wmi.conf for modified asus-wmi.c
( /etc/modprobe.d/asus_wmi.conf )

options asus_wmi wapf=0
Allow override/set wapf in asus-wmi.ko without asus_nb_wmi
By default wapf=-1 and do nothing.
Value wapf = 0 set (override ) any other values

options asus_wmi disable_wlan_auto_hw_switch_detect=1
1 – disable wlan_ctrl_by_user = 1 and prevent explode my mind with message
Hard blocked: yes
instead of expected Hard blocked: no!
0 – do nothing with original code ( by default )

Reason for options?
1)
I don't see wapf in eeepc-wmi.ko... and in future some -wmi.ko without
extended config damage wireless lan for years or two for thousand users. :)
2)
I don't like rebuild driver after every update :Very Big Smile:

2014-07-02 Thread Hans de Goede
Hi All,

I'm an upstream kernel developer who happened to stumble over this bug.
The proper solution here is to add a dmi based quirk to the asus-nb-wmi
driver to use wapf=4 by default. Note the wapf=4 not wapf=1 which
everyone has been testing with sofar.

I would like to add a proper fix for this to the upstream kernel (which
should then eventually find its way to the ubuntu kernels when ubuntu
switches to a newer kernel).

I need your help for this. First of all please adjust the workaround
with the /etc/modprobe.d/asus_nb_wmi.conf file to set wapf to 4. Then
reboot and test that wifi still works, and if you've bluetooth and that
that also works.

Once you've confirmed that everything is fine with wapf=4, run the
following command:

cat /sys/class/dmi/id/product_name

From a terminal and add a post here with the output of this command.
Then I can add a quirk for your model to asus-nb-wmi.c and send a patch
upstream.

Thanks,

Hans

p.s.

The latest upstream code already has a quirk for the specific model
(1015E) this bug is about, but I do still need the requested infor from
people with other models who are also subscribed to this bug.

Hi Hans,

Thank you very much for your help.
I can't help you right now because I am on a business trip and won't be
able to access that machine until late July.

Best Regards,

[Bug 1277959] Re: [Asus 1015E] Fn+F2 is not working for activating/deactivating wifi

2014-06-21 Thread Aleksa
Hi! I have the same problem with Fn+F2 button combination. I updated the
BIOS, and the new relese says that Disable combo WLAN card L0S. I
don't know did that disable Fn+F2 conbination or what, but i get wifi

So, to fix led, enable asus-nb-wmi kernel modul, and tray 4th step of
there fix
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2181558p=12819605#post12819605.

I don't know how to fix Fn+F2, so this is my comment for now.
