Well, I couldn't upgrade to 6.10 (ran into bug 71483/68799/73467/96094) so I just did a from-scratch reinstall of 7.04. Ah, just realised that I'm currently on 6.06 not 6.10, so if gksudo changed to not require the '--' between the two releases then this bug report is mistaken.
