[Bug 1281966] Re: [Dell Inspiron 3421] CRITICAL / HIGH failures found in fwts report

2014-03-10 Thread Ivan Hu
The s1, s2 failures,
klog: HIGH Kernel message: [ 0.185490] ACPI Exception: AE_NOT_FOUND, While
evaluating Sleep State [\_S1_]
(20130517/hwxface-571)
klog: HIGH Kernel message: [ 0.185497] ACPI Exception: AE_NOT_FOUND, While
evaluating Sleep State [\_S2_] (20130517/hwxface-571)

The failures come from firmware not provide _S1 and _S2 objects, so that the
kernel complains about cannot find _S1,_S2 namespace objects that contains the
register values for the sleep state when kernel would like to setup all the
sleep state information. This means kernel don't know how to enter S1/S2 sleep
state.
But it should not be a problem if the S1/S2 sleep state isn't supported
intentionally.

The patch has sent to lower the failure level on fwts of the _S1 and _S2
objects cannot be find.
Please refer to and follow by the bug#1279714.
It should be worked after fwts version V14.02.00

The S1 and S2 are not support for the machine, is should not be a
problem.

[Bug 1281966] Re: [Dell Inspiron 3421] CRITICAL / HIGH failures found in fwts report

2014-03-10 Thread Ivan Hu
The brightness control related failures,
klog: HIGH Kernel message: [ 10.171918] ACPI Error:
[\_SB_.PCI0.GFX0.DD02._BCL] Namespace lookup failure, AE_NOT_FOUND
(20130517/psargs-359)
klog: HIGH Kernel message: [ 10.171928] ACPI Error: Method parse/execution
failed [\_SB_.PCI0.PEG0.PEGP.DD02._BCL] (Node 88007074ba28), AE_NOT_FOUND
(20130517/psparse-536)

method: Detected error 'Not found' when evaluating
'\_SB_.PCI0.PEG0.PEGP.DD02._BCL'.
method: Detected error 'Not found' when evaluating
'\_SB_.PCI0.PEG0.PEGP.DD02._BCM'.
method: Detected error 'Not found' when evaluating
'\_SB_.PCI0.PEG0.PEGP.DD02._BQC'.

_BCM, _BQC, _BCL failures due to firmware not implement these ACPI
methods, might affect the brightness control, or it might directly
control by graphic drivers not through these ACPI methods. Also need to
check if there are any brightness issue on this machine.

[Bug 1281966] Re: [Dell Inspiron 3421] CRITICAL / HIGH failures found in fwts report

2014-03-10 Thread Ivan Hu
The DSM failures,
klog: HIGH Kernel message: [ 9.231078] ACPI Warning: \_SB_.PCI0.GFX0._DSM:
Argument #4 type mismatch - Found [Integer], ACPI requires [Package]
(20130517/nsarguments-95)
klog: HIGH Kernel message: [ 9.237756] ACPI Warning: \_SB_.PCI0.GFX0._DSM:
Argument #4 type mismatch - Found [Buffer], ACPI requires [Package]
(20130517/nsarguments-95)

Seems to the mismatch Argument#4 that the graphic driver invokes the ACPI _DSM
method,
From the ACPI spec, the arg3 type should be Package, but graphic driver
calling _DSM method with Integer and Buffer,
So kernel complain about the mismatch the type of arg3.
Fortunately, checking the Device-Specific Method _DSM that firmware implement,
the Arg3 doesn't be used on firmware.
So it should not be a problem of these mismatch if there are no any graphic
functions fail.
