I am having the same problem..when I close my laptop lid, and then open it up, I have a black screen like it's completely off and nothing seems to wake it up. dell inspiron 1525 as well.. each time I have to do a hard reboot, and when I do now that I have installed 14.04 today I do notice at the boot screen is very dim and I have to adjust the laptop brightness every time (i've turned the power off..if i reboot or shut down it stays normal). Never had any problems before.
