Public bug reported: Upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04 brought this behaviour. After reinstalling gnome-shell which was uninstalled during the upgrade, I can select gnome-shell in gdm but it won't show anything. Also no keyboard shortcuts are working to invoke commands.
Unity is working perfectly though.
