Thanks for the finding. Indeed mine was also found fglrx in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-local.conf. Not sure how it happened, cos I was upgrading from 11.04 > 11.10 > 12.04 > 14.04. Turns out fglrx was in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-local.conf for some reason. After removing it, the Catalyst driver works fine.
