[Bug 1311402] Re: Totem playin DVD fullscreen causes CPU to overheat

2014-04-26 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
** Tags added: bios-outdated-1.08

** Description changed:

- I play a DVD in full screen mode on my large monitor (2560 x 1440 pixels).
The CPU temperature quickly rises from about 50 degrees Celsius to 80 degrees,
causing the fan to run at full speed (which is noisy and irritating).
- Running top shows that Totem is only using about 25% to 30% CPU. CPU is
running in Conservative mode at 800MHz (36% of full speed).

This behaviour does not occur in full screen mode on my smaller monitor

Thank you for your bug report, seems like your issue there is that
totem/gstreamer are using too much cpu for video decoding?

[Bug 1311402] Re: Totem playin DVD fullscreen causes CPU to overheat

2014-04-23 Thread Eleanor Ellis
I have run apport-collect 1311402
However, I had already removed totem from my system. I don't know if this will
cause a problem with collecting the log files this way.

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete = Confirmed

[Bug 1311402] Re: Totem playin DVD fullscreen causes CPU to overheat

2014-04-23 Thread Eleanor Ellis
@ Sebastien Bacher (seb128)
Yes it seems that it is using too much CPU. However, running top shows that
Totem is only using about 25% to 30% CPU, so top does not detect too much CPU
usage. Also the CPU usage doesn't change much whether totem runs full screen or
in a window.

CPU is running in Conservative mode at 800MHz (36% of full speed).

[Bug 1311402] Re: Totem playin DVD fullscreen causes CPU to overheat

2014-04-23 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.15 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot,
please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
Confirmed.

Thanks in advance.

No I don't want to test another kernel. I have simply removed totem from my
system as VLC works without this bug.
