The first time I found this bug is on Ubuntu 14.10. I was hopping that it could be solved in 15.04, but the bug still occurred in the latest distribution. I have discovered that when lightdm appears again it's possible to press the ESC key to make the login buttons appear again, but also appears "Unsuccesful Authentication" (translated from italian "Autenticazione non riuscita"). It seems to me a problem with lightdm too. I am then able to restart lightdm and login to unity7 or unity8 X session.
