Re: [Bug 133020] Re: Vmware server missing in Gutsy
Martin Cleaver, have you enabled the partner repo? That means you should have a line like this in the "/etc/apt/sources.list": deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu gutsy partner On my system: $ apt-cache show vmware-server Package: vmware-server Priority: optional Section: partner/misc Installed-Size: 127592 Maintainer: VMware Build Team <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Architecture: i386 Version: 1.0.4-1gutsy2 -- Vmware server missing in Gutsy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/133020 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 133020] Re: Vmware server missing in Gutsy
@Ralph, this is really interesting. I tried those commands you've tried and got same results. The only way I can see that VMware Player is in "Add/Remove Application" GUI program. Start it from "Applications" -> "Add/Remove...". Change the application category on top-right corner to "Third party applications", select "All" in the left column, then I can see "Opera" and "VMware Player" listed. Ralph you must have missed something. I saw vmware-player in the partner repo from the first day Gutsy was released. You can install it by using "Add/Remove Applications". [Bug 133020] Re: Vmware server missing in Gutsy
Thanks Yan. I realised player couldn't be upgraded to server, I was trying to say that those with player installed from pre-Gutsy will expect it to be upgraded one-day to a Gutsy player. If you're saying that server is a super-set of player then that's fine and maybe we don't need player on Gutsy, but somehow people need to be made aware that they should switch to that instead. However, a bit of a Google suggests that they're aimed at two different purposes, with player being better for running one VM that isn't headless. Any official news of whether player will also appear in time? -- Vmware server missing in Gutsy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/133020 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 133020] Re: Vmware server missing in Gutsy
Ralph, though from the same mother, vmware-server and vmware-player are two different products, just like Mercedes-Benz 300 compared with Benz 500. vmware-player is a light-weight player-only product with limited management feature, while vmware-server is a full-fledged VM product giving for free aimed for bigger market share and threats from Xen. What about vmware-player? That used to be in the old repo. structure but hasn't appeared in the new one yet. Is it intended that it will? I'm not sure of the differences between vmware-server and vmware-player but having installed player people are going to expect an `apt-get upgrade' to do its stuff one day. -- Vmware server missing in Gutsy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/133020 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hey all, I see the vmware-server package is already in the partner repo, try it. And close this bug if it's OK to you. [Bug 133020] Re: Vmware server missing in Gutsy
Just got to this bug after investigating why a friend's vmware-player installation from 7.04's commercial repo no longer works after upgrading to 7.10. We don't want to move away from repo-supplied packages since smooth upgrades is one of its key advantages. However, it does seem that a big warning that VMWare would stop working on doing the upgrade should have been very prominent. Please consider this for future releases -- for some users the ability to run their old Win32 installations for that one important program is a key factor in their ability to move to Ubuntu for everything else. Looking forward to it becoming available in the `partner' repo. -- Vmware server missing in Gutsy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/133020 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 133020] Re: Vmware server missing in Gutsy
The packages in the "partner" repository are commercial (free and/or non-free) packages that Canonical customers pay to get packaged / verified / maintained in different ways. As such, it is easier to ask any give package's original publisher (in this case vmware) about its availability. This being said, I just asked one of the people in charge of commercial packaging at Canonical and I was told this specific package is being worked on and should be available "soon". Just to be clear, the process to get a pakage in the "partner" repository (previously known as "commercial" in other Ubuntu versions) is a commercial deal between a third party and Canonical, not a community-driven process. -- Vmware server missing in Gutsy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/133020 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
