Same problem here with Thinkpad T43 and up-to-date Gutsy. Brightness Applet with the red circle and the message ''Cannot get laptop panel brightness'',see screenshot. I have no sliders in g-p-m for the brightness,see screenshot. And the ''on screen display'' don't work anymore. This all worked a few days ago! I have an IBM X31 with the same problem. With Feisty it worked perfectly. I have an IBM T23 with the same problem. I don't know about Feisty (I never used it because of other problems), but it was working in Gutsy a few days ago. There were some updates, and now it doesn't seem to be working. The indicator pops up, but the indicator just stays all the way at the bottom, no matter where the brightness is. Same problem here with Sony SZ3XWP, nvidia card, Fn keys work fine to manually dim the monitor but the applet doesn't work, neither does the automatic dimming when I unplugged the laptop.
