[Bug 134944] Re: Keyboard locks up randomly while typing

2011-09-19 Thread Clueless
I often have to type my letters twice as the characters are not being
registered. Typing slowly makes the process a bit manageable.
I have a harder time using the delete key when I misspell a word as some of the
keystrokes I enter dont get registered.

i am runing ubuntu 11.10 oneiric beta

[Bug 134944] Re: Keyboard locks up randomly while typing

2011-09-19 Thread David-Sarah Hopwood
I often have to type my letters twice as the characters are not being
registered. Typing slowly makes the process a bit manageable.

That doesn't really sound like the same bug. The other reports here are
of the keyboard becoming completely unresponsive. (I've had that symptom
since my last report above, although I forgot to check the interrupts.)

[Bug 134944] Re: Keyboard locks up randomly while typing

2011-08-18 Thread David-Sarah Hopwood
I also have keyboard lockups on Ubuntu Maverick with KDE 4.5.5 (kubuntu-
desktop packages on top of a Gnome install). Ctrl-Alt-F1 does *not* work
when the keyboard is locked up, in my case. This is the laptop keyboard,
not a USB keyboard, on a Dell Pavilion dv8 ea1110. (Not quite the same
system as the original poster, but close.)

A workaround is to software-suspend and resume -- presumably hibernate
would also work -- and then the keyboard responds again. I can't
remember whether Caps Lock works (I have Caps Lock swapped with Esc, so
that might be misleading anyway).

I've bound 'konsole -e watch cat /proc/interrupts' to a panel icon, so
the next time it happens I should be able to see whether I'm getting
keyboard interrupts. Currently I can see one of the fields incrementing
by two for each keypress, so I know which field to look at.

Also using binary NVidia drivers at the moment, but I don't have any
reason to believe it's related to that. When I was using the nv drivers
this problem would still happen occasionally.

[Bug 134944] Re: Keyboard locks up randomly while typing

2011-08-18 Thread David-Sarah Hopwood
Oh, another symptom is that *sometimes* when this happens, the system
behaves as though the shift key were held down (e.g. left mouse clicks
cause a selection rather than a click). However I'm pretty sure that
none of the modifier keys are physically stuck down; if that were the
problem, I wouldn't expect suspend/resume to unlock the keyboard.

[Bug 134944] Re: Keyboard locks up randomly while typing

2009-07-27 Thread Murz
I have the same issue on Kubuntu Jaunty KDE 4.3 RC3 (and on KDE 4.2 too) and
NVidia:
the keyboard randomly locks when working. I can't found the static way to
reproduce it and have no records in log files when this happines.
When the keyboard locks up, I can turn on/of LED indicators and switch to
console (Ctrl+Alt+F1..F7) and back to xorg, in console I can type anything -
the keyboard works and fully functional.

This problem is not only on one computer, it is on 3 computers in my
office!

Can I turn on more logging for detect the source of problem?

[Bug 134944] Re: Keyboard locks up randomly while typing

2007-09-04 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Brijam:
The thing to watch is the row containing i8042 (this shows you interrupts from
your built in keyboard and trackpad). As you type you need this to rise as it
means your keyboard is trying to send you information. Try watching what
happens while the keyboard is working and then when it stops take another look.
It may also help if you have a top window running somewhere you can see it in
an emergency so you can see the Cpu line to tell whether your computer is doing
anything when the problem happens.

2007-09-03 Thread Brijam
Here's the result of watch cat /proc/interrupts about a minute after a
keyboard lockup. This is the first lockup I've had in several days. I
had to grab a screenshot - it was impossible to cut paste the konsole
window with only a 2 second delay. I compared it to watch cat
/proc/interrupts on a fresh reboot. On the fresh reboot the only change
is a much lower LOC number under both processors and a much lower timer
number under CPU1.

2007-08-30 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Brijam:
It might be easier to just have a terminal that is running the command
watch cat /proc/interrupts
if you can still raise/switch windows when this happens. These steps probably
won't result in a fix but they might help the diagnosis of the problem.

You may want to try booting with the noapic option as there are a LOT of
Pavilion with strange timing related issues (doing so has other
drawbacks though). Further, check the HP site and report whether there
are any BIOS updates for your laptop...

I just had a lockup with the open source nv driver so I'm (thankfully)
switching back to the Nvidia binaries. That OS driver is really fuzzy.

Any other ideas?

[Bug 134944] Re: Keyboard locks up randomly while typing

2007-08-29 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
I have ideas but they are only more complicated and involve you finding
a way to check whether the keyboard interrupts are still being delivered
by looking at cat /proc/interrupts and seeing whether the number
associated with the i8042 for your keyboard is rising when you press a
key. I have no idea how you go about this when you have no keyboard
though. USB interrupts should be a different line. It is also worth
reporting whether caps lock works when this happens...

Re: [Bug 134944] Re: Keyboard locks up randomly while typing

2007-08-29 Thread Brijam
I'm happy to jump through those hoops, this is driving me crazy. It
just happened again. I think it may be connected to a Ctrl key
combination, or a Shift-Ctrl or possibly an accidental press of the blue
Function key (which does nothing as far as I can see).

Both times today I am /not/ using the USB keyboard, but the built-in
keyboard on the laptop.

Re: checking kb interrupts, it must be possible to run a cron script
that does that and captures the results in log file, right?

Can you reproduce the issue when using the open source nv driver?

I've switched to nv now, I'll post again if it occurs or in a few days
if it doesn't.
