In mysql-5.5, we are on 5.5.46 in Precise and Trusty and this was fixed
in upstream release 5.5.41.

In mysql-5.6, we are on 5.6.27 in Trusty, Vivid, Wily and Xenial and
this was fixed in upstream release 5.6.22.

upsteam bug #67433 has been closed.  The unsafe syntax will be removed

 suggests that there is no known use case for this command, that the only
 use of the command is by mistake, causes problems and/or data loss, and
 this has happened in the real world in production environments.

If the only use for the API in question is to shoot oneself in the foot,
then I think it's perfectly acceptable to change that API in an SRU.  +1
from the SRU team.
