Public bug reported:

All automatic updates have been installed on my system (bug reporter
couldn't find an update trail, so that may be an issue, too).

Recently, in the middle of a session, my sound output ceased. Just
before it happened I had made minor changes to the Default Applications
using the GUI - those changes were only to replace Abiword and Gnumeric
with their Libreoffice equivalents for spreadsheets and word processor
documents.

Launching "Volume Control" settings, the Alsamixer display had no
indicators for controls listed under 'playback' (f3). Instead, there is
just an item labelled <S/PDIF> with '00' in a box above it and this does
not respond to numeral or arrow keys.

I have tried reinstalling Pulseaudio. This hasn't helped. I have
installed pavucontrol. Now, during playback of video and sound files,
when I view pavucontrol the blue levels indicator for my sound cards is
moving as if there is a signal, but there is still no sound. I have
tried plugging in other speakers to confirm that it's not my speakers at
fault. I have also tried adjusting the level under the 'output' tab of
pavucontrol, but this has not helped, either.

(NB, I have tried plugging speakers into both devices)

An unresolved thread on Ubuntuforums.org suggests that one Ubuntu user
has had this problem on x64 architecture just after intalling version
3.13.0-37 of the Linux kernel. I have the same Kernel version. Another
user has had their sound disappear, then reappear after putting their
laptop in sleepmode overnight. Again, same kernel version, but desktop
environment unspecified.
