I've the same laptop and I make it work by using the following flag in /etc/default/grub GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="i8042.noloop=1" This post gave me the solution: http://forum.novatech.co.uk/archive/index.php/t-26251.html After that you have to recreate the boot grub entry (I'm on ArchLinux: grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg. I think that in Ubuntu the command is "update-grub"). I installed generic kernel 3.17.1 and touchpad is still not detected. As previously stated 3.18-rc2 does not work on my machine. I tried running the 3.18 generic kernel but system did not want to boot. It could not detect boot hard drive or something to that effect. Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.18 kernel[0].
