Public bug reported:

Using Dapper, Edgy, Feisty and Gutsy on 2 almost identical Toshiba
notebooks, I've found that almost without fail my computers' sound will
stop working completely at some point during my sessions. This causes
MPD (music player daemon) and any other multimedia applications to
hang, although in general the computer is still responsive for non-media
applications. I then have to reboot (or suspend, when I have working
ACPI support, which I don't at present as I'm using Gutsy) the computer
to restore sound capability.

The most common precipitating factor seems to be receiving a message via
Gaim/Pidgin whilst the sound card is already busy playing an MP3 or
otherwise in use. It does not happen *every* time I receive a message,
but 9 times out of 10 when the sound dies, it is coincident with
receiving an IM.

As mentioned above, I have 2 almost identical Toshiba laptops (Portege
3480CT & 3490CT), and have now confirmed that the problem occurs with
both of them. Although it could be a hardware fault specific to these
models, I think it unlikely and have been unable to find any reports of
this happening on Windows. I believe it much more likely to be a bug in
the i810 kernel module and also not a general ALSA fault, as otherwise
many more people would be affected.
