There are two other bugs which all seem to be about the same issue: bug #28661 bug #159317 This issue is currently happening to me, but I don't know which should be "the" bug, and which should be duplicates. Obviously bug #28661 is oldest, but this bug has the most recent activity. If it's okay with others, in a week or so (when I get back from vacation), I'll mark the others as duplicates of this one and add some of my own debugging info here. By the way, this issues happens to me on arbitrary emails. If I kill evolution and restart, it is able to format and display whichever email it previously choked on. And it is always able to display emails when I open them in a separate window, it issue is only with the preview pane. I installed the -dbg version of all evolution components and it actually appears to happen less frequently (though this could simply be in my head). I also see this "formatting message" message occasionally and evolution hangs. I have evolution open continuously and it works most of the time. It can be running for many days (reading many emails) without showing this message. I have one pop and one imap account. The traces seem to suggest ldap is being used. I retract my previous theory. I just had it happen with a single sentence email with no images. However, still no problems with Gmail IMAP. I've tried forwarding scary messages to my gmail account, but I think once evolution chokes on a message once, it's fine loading it again. I have this behaviour as well, and I as well use it primarily for the exchange connector. I tend to notice it happen when previewing emails sent by larger commercial companies with images/complex formatting in them. For example, I get a monthly email from my car insurance that is loaded with images, and that will take down evolution without fail. Now on Gutsy final and this is still happening. Every few minutes! If you shut evolution down (evolution --force-shutdown) and then reopen, you can then read emails. But, after a little while you open another email and it hangs with "formatting message".
