[Bug 1441423] Re: printers not listed

2015-08-26 Thread Mark Thornton
I have the same problem. I can't find anything that allows the use of a
remote printer (i.e. one shared by cups on another machine on the
network). Local system is cups 2.02, remote is cups 1.7.2 (Ubuntu
14.04).

setting to shared makes the local printers visible.

however, networked printers are not visible in system-config-printer
(although visible in cups 2.0.2 webgui)

for clarification, ubuntu 15.04/cups 2.0.2, system-config-printer

1.
network-enabled printer such as Brother MFC-8380DN, is visible.

2.
printer attached to ubuntu pc/cups (various versions) with shared set, is not
visible.

[Bug 1441423] Re: printers not listed

2015-05-13 Thread Till Kamppeter
Your problem I have also discovered on my machines and reported upstream
as

https://www.cups.org/str.php?L4628

For the time being do the following:

If you do not want to share any of your local printers, turn off printer
sharing via the Server settings in system-config-printer or via the

cupsctl --no-share-printers

command.

If you want to share at least one of your printers, set all printers
individually to shared, even the ones you do not intend to access from a
remote machine.

In both cases all printers will get listed in print dialogs and system-
config-printer then.

[Bug 1441423] Re: printers not listed

2015-05-08 Thread quiricada
i spoke too soon.

i got a pc working somehow, on a laptop, i did the same setup and conf
and nothing works.

1
if Shared is unchecked, printer is visible in cups webgui; it does not list in
system-config-printer and print dialogs.

if printer is added using system-config-printer with Shared unchecked,
it will disappear after Apply/Save.

2
network/remote printer with raw queue, cups will always force Shared unchecked;
said printer disappear from the list.

3
network/remote printer with specified printer driver (rather than raw queue),
Shared can be checked; said printer appear on the list, however, print jobs
will result in filter failure due to double conversion? suggestion is to use
raw queue (see point 2)

[Bug 1441423] Re: printers not listed

2015-05-07 Thread quiricada
hi Alfred,

thanks for the suggestion. have been relying on scp the file and lpr on
remote.

now, i think i got it working? attached cupsd.conf.

some sites that i looked at before i got it working
http://chschneider.eu/linux/server/cups.shtml

http://askubuntu.com/questions/345083/how-do-i-disable-automatic-remote-
printer-installation

for the filter failure on remote printer, read in some mailing lists
about using raw queue to avoid double conversion on both client and
server side? although been doing same setup on adding remote printer on
previous versions of cups and everything was ok. on cups webgui, the
remote printer's make and model is indicated as Remote Printer.

remote cups server 1.6.1 / ubuntu 12.10
client cups server 2.0.2 / lubuntu 15.04

Hi quiricada,
I wonder if un-ticking the view - discovered printers can resolve showing
duplicated printers? I think this might address your point 3.

[Bug 1441423] Re: printers not listed

2015-04-29 Thread quiricada
after stopping cups, i rm printers.conf and deleted the network printers
entry from printers.conf.O

restarted cups

using cups webgui, manually added the network printers with Share
field checked.

all the printers as seen in cups webgui now appears in ubuntu print
dialogs and in system-config-printer.

1
something to do with the Share field?

2
i've manually changed the Share from No to Yes in printers.conf (after stopping
cups), when cups is restarted after the edit, the Share is magically forced
back to No, maybe Spock did it.

3
the reason am trying to un-share the network printer is that with share on, the
same network printer is shown multiple times by the wonderful network
discovery. (by the source printer and from all the pc that shared it!)

4
is there some way to remove/detach a network printer in cups webgui?
if i remove a printer in cups webgui, it redirects to the source printer webgui
and if you have enough rights, the source printer is deleted!
i just want to remove/detach the network printer from my pc, not remove the
printer totally from the network.

5
redirects after modifying printers does not work, results in blank screen. is
this cups or firefox problem?
eg.
http://localhost:631/admin/?OP=redirectURL=/printers/llama

6
now that i can see all the printers, i still can't print to the network
printers, it's indicating Filter failure when printing a pdf file to an epson
lx-310 dot matrix.
it was working before upgrading ubuntu/cups.

saw Alfred comment, so am not the only one with this problem.

[Bug 1441423] Re: printers not listed

2015-04-28 Thread Alfred
Same problem as quiricada says in #8, if I un-share a printer, it cannot
be listed in 'system-config-printer'.

I think this happens after I upgrade from ubuntu 14.10 to 15.04 at Apr.
24. But today I just find it because I want to print something, but
cannot find any printers listed in print dialog.

View menu : 'Discovered Printers' is checked

If I un-check Publish shared printers ... in system-config-printer -
server - settings, this problem disappears (unshared printers can be
found). Do I misunderstand this option? Or anything wrong here?

In system-config-printer you can turn on and off listing of discovered
printers via the View menu. What is your setting there?

checked = Discovered Printers
