IMO this is a bug. Let me try to describe it. I have a image file (let's say .png file). I could open this image file using image viewer to view it or using GIMP to edit it. I want default application to be image viewer, so that whenever I double-click on it, image viewer shows the image. Sometimes, for editing, I right click on image file (on desktop or in file manager) to bring up context menu. In this context menu, I select Open With > GIMP to edit file. At this point .png file gets associated with GIMP. Any double-click operation on .png file will bring up GIMP. Which is very annoying. I think, Open With > ... should not change default association. Or better yet there could be preference check-box some where in File (Nautilus?) Manager's preferences. In fact, I was looking into preferences hoping that there must be some setting controlling this behavior. Hi, I think following applies here: I opened a folder via "Open With" and then "kdirstat", after this when I tried opening Places->HomeFolder it opened it with kdirstat. Thats highly undesirable. This was corrected by opening a folder "open with"->"nautilus". Confirmed on Hardy, but there is also a way to reverse it. Details: On a fresh install the .xcf files are associated with Gimp. If you right-click on a .xcf file in nautilus you are offered the option of opening the file with Gimp or 'Other application'. If you select Other and then eog, eog will try and fail to load it. Any time you then click on a .xcf file nautilus will try to launch eog and fail. "image viewer" (eog) is now the top choice in the context menu and the default. There is no obvious way to change the default back. To change the default back to Gimp, go to properties for the file and select the 'Open with' tab. This bug was nominated for Gutsy but does currently not qualify for a 7.10 stable release update (SRU) and the nomination is therefore declined. According the the SRU policy, the fix should already be deployed and tested in the current development version before an update to the stable releases will be considered. With 7.10 now released, that policy applies to this bug.
