Could this be the same as Debian bug https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=295605 'pterm doesn't start with Unicode data in
cut buffer ("Gdk-ERROR **: BadMatch")'?
That was fixed upstream in commit 36ddc5708
https://git.tartarus.org/?p=simon/putty.git;a=commit;h=36ddc57084
which debuted in upstream release 0.68; so the fix is in Ubuntu Bionic and
later.
I haven't checked if the fix was backported for any of the currently
supported Ubuntu distros (Precise 0.62, Trusty 0.63, Xenial 0.67).
