Also, let me add that these characters seem to be debug messages (maybe warnings?) about X (I can barely see something about freedesktop.org in these messages). Actually, the problem seems to be that after the loading bar during boot has finished, and just right before X starts, we see the debug/warning/message console (Ctrl-Alt-F8). I believe that it would be probably more friendly, if we did not see it. The delay of the desktop happens to me, as well (it didn't happen in Feisty, neither in previous versions). Personally, I don't have any problems with the splash screen, but after the loading bar during boot is finished, instantly, I see some white characters on the black screen. I think it would be better not to see these characters. Forgot to mention something important, there is no login splash screen either. During the wait only a light brown background appears.
