also per comments 37 and 38 its possibly the hardware. In #46, there is a difference of an ALS entry. (Pat's does not have one, while the one containing an error has one) but the error is contained in the ALS/PS, while LHJ_PS looks normal. These functions that look like they pertain to calibration. As in the log from #45 seems to point to ALS/PS reading from mt-i2c, it could originate in the hardware, but the software doesn't recover. Whether that software is the driver, android sensors or powerd or something else would require digging through the code. My guess is the (als) driver doesn't handle this well. It is interesting that this seems to happen on krillin as well, but apparently not all devices. @Pat I've rebooted the phone (3 times), activated SSH access (to read the syslog), opened the ProximityCheck app and played with it (press "Start", move the hand near the sensor, move the phone to my head as if I were taking a phone call, etc.). As explained earlier, the app turns orange to indicate the sensor in "NEAR" state, and never turns back to "UNKNOWN" or "FAR" again. I'm now facing this issue constantly, with every single call. I found a solution that worked on my phone BQ HD5 , Looks to me like a hardware issue. My lcd was sligthly losen in the top right corner next to the sensor. When i pressed in the screen in the corner i felt some movement, what i did was that i gently pulled to screen up a little and putted a little bit of glue inbetween the LCD screen and the frame just up in the corner. @albaguirre It might really be the proximity sensor. But in a strange way. Kind of, "it depends on the mood of the device, and when in phone calls it's almost always in a bad mood." I've noticed this today when my son wanted to find out what the ProximityCheck app is about. I tried to demo it to him, and the sensor switched to "NEAR" (orange) and didn't switch back to "FAR" anymore. I tried again turning the sensor off and on again in the app, and the erroneous behavior remained. I closed the app and tried again, and again it remained orange after moving it to the ear and taking it away again. In another try the app kind of flickered, mostly orange but green inbetween for fractions of a second even with nothing close the phone. Most interesting though, after some time when trying another time the app finally showed normal behavior, with the proximity sensor telling "NEAR" with an object right in front of the phone and "FAR" with the same object further away from it. Very strange. So, is this maybe a hardware defect? @albaguirre I encounter this with every single call, no kidding. No matter whether I place that call or I receive it. Maybe once every month it happens that the screen stays alight (as described above), but not even then it's "normal" behavior as you see it on feature phones on competing smart phone platforms. I dont use screen protector but having issues with BQ 5HD , going black during call. Tried to reset the phone the other day. But the problem is still there. Nice idea the one with the autobrightness. Unfortunately, it doesn't make a difference. That the problem is some kind of (almost regular) race condition could be very probable. I just had one single occasion when the screen, well, still stayed black after removing the phone from my ear but stayed alight after pressing the hardware lock button. So I could hang up "like a normal person". The phone call before that and after that, though, still had the screen turn back black immediately after pressing the hardware lock screen and going alight for half a second. Same as before. But I'll keep my autobrightness turned off for now and observe if anything is different than before. Doesn't look very probable though. I'm not using and have never used any screen protector. Instead I have my phone protected in a FREITAG phone sleeve [1], but clearly I need to take it out before answering or placing a phone call. While I cannot yet reproduce it I have a germ of a theory. From the logs I see that both Peter and Mathew have autobrightness enabled. I also see that the powerd logic is explicitly setting the brightness to zero seemingly independent of the proximity reading. So perhaps we have a race between proximity, screen on and off, and autobrightness which is confusing powerd into a bad state. @peter please try turning Adjust brightness automatically to off in the battery indicator and see if you still get the issue. I'm gessing the dialler/phone app is getting into some sort of confusion because of the states of the two sims. So, yes, I hope it is relevant. Is this relevant information for this bug? Roaming is disabled on the Austrian SIM. I just leave the SIM card in the phone when I'm not in Austria (or Italy), which is most of the time. (In fact, when I'm on Swiss territory I'd like to manually deactivate the second SIM. It rarely makes sense to have both cards active at the same time. I may file an enhancement request on this one day.)
