Thanks for your bug report! Since Gutsy, a lot of things improved about usplash. Firstly, Gutsy installed wrong values in /etc/usplash.conf, which caused a lot of computers (especially laptops) to have missing usplash screen and even sometime causing very long boot time. If you re-install your computer with latest ubuntu hardy release, this problem should not happen. Can someone confirms if this bug happens on a ubuntu hardy installation? I have the same problem. I'm running Gusty on Acer Aspire 5050, ATI x1100. To get around it, install startup manager (sudo apt-get install startupmanager), disable the splash screen and choose show text. That way by default you see whatever is being done during boot (and i prefer it cos it's faster and if it ever locks up or freezes, i see what caused it). Hello, I am also getting this issue. Ubuntu 7.10 works fine. Except I don't get any loading bar (blank screen), until the login screen. When I restart the X server (ctrl alt return) I get a blank screen and sometimes symbols (like the pound symbol and more), and when I turn the computer off I don't get the logout sound, nor the unload bar. I'm also facing this issue. I've just installed Ubuntu 7.10 rc on my Sony laptop and now have a completely blank screen during boot, until the gdm login screen appears. The screen is also completely blank during shutdown until the computer powers off. Everything else seems to be working fine in Ubuntu. Booting and shutting down from the 7.10 rc LiveCD is problem-free - this only started happening after I installed 7.10 rc to my hard drive. This issue was not present on Ubuntu 7.04. My graphics card is a Mobility Radeon M6 LY. Since this bug seems similar to this one: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/125589 I'm attaching the outputs of 'lspci -vv' and 'lspci -vvn' as requested in the above bug report, in case they're of any importance.
