No, this was a Gutsy-only issue. The bug didn't occur in Hardy Heron - Compiz works flawlessly. I don't know about Intrepid, frankly I have given up installing beta releases. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from cdimage.ubuntu.com) If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Thanks in advance. I seem to get different output from Gutsy final. There's still a chance that compiz successfully activates, but the effects are gone on the next login. Usually the Desktop Effects won't activate at all. I attached two text files, each one containing a different output of gnome-appearance- properties after the Desktop Effects failed to activate, output2.txt showing additional information that might be useful. @Amaranth You certainly know the inner workings better than I do, but I'm not convinced this is actually glxinfo.
