Yes, that manually installed libreadline in /usr/local/ was the problem. I renamed the links /usr/local/lib/libreadline.so.5.2 (link target: /usr/local/lib/libreadline.so.5.2) and /usr/local/lib/libreadline.so (link target: /usr/local/lib/libreadline.so.5.2), and now gpg does not give that error, hence the update-manager works.
