[Bug 154403] Re: Slooooww server speeds

2007-10-19 Thread Mike Dahlgren
Jonathan,

Just to clarify I have no "real" affiliation with Ubuntu or
Canonical, I too work in the IT field however I try to help out and
close bug reports when I get a chance. As for the number of
installations I don't think anyone knows. If I had to guess I would say
it's in the millions but their is no central way to track it. For
reference I saw that launchpad has 1.3 million registered users, so that
should say something about the size of the community.

  Thanks,
  ~ Mike

[Bug 154403] Re: Slooooww server speeds

2007-10-19 Thread Jonathan Caum
Thanks Mike! I didn't know where else to post a bug about an Ubuntu
server, so I just placed it here. I'm working in the IT Consulting
field, so seeing your server behave slowly concerns me for your sake. I
started thinking about what could be wrong on your end. I was just
trying to make sure nothing was serious.

One more thing, do you guys have a list or a count of the number of
computers that use Ubuntu now? I'm curious to see how a rough estimate
of how many users there are now.

[Bug 154403] Re: Slooooww server speeds

2007-10-19 Thread Mike Dahlgren
Thanks for your bug report! The slow speeds are to be expected with the
amount of traffic the servers have been getting from this major release.
I would expect that this is mostly going to go away in the next couple
of days. Also, the update utility is going to pick a server to pull
updates from a list of about thirty. If the speed is unacceptable you
can go to System-> Administration -> "Software sources" and choose a
different server from the list. If you feel like that's not sufficient
and there is something else going on please feel free to re-open the bug
report and include what server and transfer speeds that you are getting.

  Thanks,
 ~ Mike
