2016-03-02 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Max May, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

Could you please run the following command once from a terminal by ensuring you
have the package xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes button for
attaching additional debugging information:
apport-collect -p mesa 1544936

When reporting xorg related bugs in the future, please do so via the
above method. You can learn more about this functionality at

2016-02-19 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Just reckognized that this but is not about output modules but
Input/Codec... Sorry,  my fault!

But nevertheless my machine plays mpeg2 files with Input/Codec
Decode=Auto just fine.

[Bug 1544936] Re: PPC: no mpeg-2 video playback

2016-02-19 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
I can not trigger this bug on my PowerBook 5,6. I get the same "libGL
error: failed to load driver: r300"-errors, but the mpeg2 video I tested
is played with default settings (video output set so automatic).

You can check which output modules are availabe on your machine with
"vlc -l | grep -i videooutput":

$ vlc -l | grep -i videoausgabe
VLC media player 2.2.2 Weatherwax (revision 2.2.2-0-g6259d80)
  directfb   DirectFB-Videoausgabe http://www.directfb.org/
  gl OpenGL-Videoausgabe (experimentell)
  xcb_glxOpenGL GLX Videoausgabe (XCB)
  aa ASCII-Art-Videoausgabe
  gles1 Videoausgabe basierend auf OpenGL für Integrierte
Systeme
  xcb_x11X11-Videoausgabe (XCB)
  yuvYUV-Videoausgabe
  xcb_xv XVideoausgabe (XCB)
  caca   Farbige ASCII-Art-Videoausgabe
  gles2 Videoausgabe basierend auf OpenGL für Integrierte
Systeme 2
  vdummy Dummy-Videoausgabe
  vdummy Statistiken-Videoausgabe

You can test the output modules specifically, e.g. with "vlc -V xcb_xv".
On my PowerBook 5,6 directfb shows no picture and gles1 shows a broken
picture. The rest works, albeith some very slowly.

Found a solution/workaround by changing Setting - Input/Codec from
Decode=Auto to Decode=VA-API.

[Bug 1544936] Re: PPC: no mpeg-2 video playback

2016-02-15 Thread Max May
How can I prevent that VLC uses the GPU to decode mpeg-2 videos?

VLC works well with mp4 or h.264 and uses (obviously) the CPU on the
PowerBook.

In that log, MPEG2 Video is decoded by your GPU, so there is very little
to nothing that VLC can do about the performance.

Quite possibly your drivers are broken.

[Bug 1544936] Re: PPC: no mpeg-2 video playback

2016-02-14 Thread Max May
As mentioned before h.264 playback is OK on the PowerBook ( ~50% cpu load).
But with mpeg-2 videos, the cpu load turns up to 100%, and the video window
becomes green. Audio is hearable.
