+1 on the 10/8 upgrade of Intrepid causing the problem for the first time, (was using Intrepid before, as well). Command line update in a terminal, (i.e. sudo apt-get dist-upgrade) at least lets this upgrade set go through. I've got the same on Ubuntu Beta since yesterday. Update-manager wants to do a partial upgrade for some reason I dont understand, and when I do that (It also says it is a distribution upgrade. I got the same thing. I looked into kdesudo and I think the problem is that it blocks the SIGCHLD handler in line 159 of kdesudo.cpp. This prevents synaptic to get the signals it needs. If I remove that line it works. I have the same problem, my old version KDE and Gnome works fine but when I try to use Synaptic in KDE 4.1 It never finishes doing the tasks. When it does that my system becomes unusable and I can't start new applications.
