FWIW I managed to forget that locking the screen triggers this bug and locked myself out in the middle of an upgrade from 15.10 to 16.04. Oops. I have included a workaround for this on the patch attached to Bug 1565178. There I have added a gnome-session inhibitor to block the screensaver, on Ubuntu GNOME we will leave this running do if the user exits the installer (rather than press restart button).
