I have just upgraded Kubuntu 8.10 to KDE 4.2 and the problem seems to be fixed there. I can confirm that in Kubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.1 Konqueror seems to assume ISO-8859-1 for all remote connections via SSH. As every Linux distro that I have tested in the past three years defaults to UTF-8 for every locale, Konqueror should either: 1) Assume UTF-8 2) Assume that whatever is used locally (check system locale) is used remotely. 3) Query the remote server for locale (simply run locale upon connecting via SSH). I can confirm this bug both for KDE 3.5.9 and KDE 4.1 RC packages. Even more, when I am trying to copy something over the network using konqueror or dolphin, I am ending with the not correct filenames. The same occurs using the Samba protocol through Konqueror and Dolphin. 64-bit hardy w. KDE4.1beta2 and confirm this bug.. Desktop in Finnish should be shown as 'Työpöytä' but it's shown Työpöytä. I can add this information: If you open the same adress in konqueror, you have an option in the menu (i think it was in extras) to change the encoding to utf-8. Afterwards the right encoding appears as well in dolphin.
