With Ubuntu 16.04, there is no video output and switching to another tty
does not work either. The monitor shows a "no video input" message, the
screen is black. This seems to happen with kernel >= 4.4.2. The current
Ubuntu live system (ubuntu-16.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso) was used for
testing.

It works with Ubuntu 15.10 (kernel 4.2).

An identical bug was filed against Fedora more than 4 months ago, but there is 
no progress:
