[Bug 162016] Re: cups printjobs unload /dev/usblp0

2011-03-16 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Hi there. Time goes by ...

I forgot to notify that my bug vanished after upgrading to Maverick.

So I don't have this problem anymore now. Thanks so far.

Ciao

2011-03-16 Thread Till Kamppeter
The removal of usblp0 is not a bug, as already discussed here. Please do
not reopen this bug.

If you have problems with printing, this is due to another problem.
Report a new bug for that.

[Bug 162016] Re: cups printjobs unload /dev/usblp0

2010-07-22 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Many thanks to You all. Today I observed a peculiar message. Please, don't
blame me if this is a no-sense question, or if it is a FAQ ...

The printer (HP1320N) prints almost well (I'm still working around some
HPLIP problem - the libusb problem has been fixed - see bug #427805).

However, everyday I get such a message in /var/log/kern.log
   kern.log.1:Jul 12 08:33:35 uffcom2 kernel: [ 2418.550539] usblp0: removed
   kern.log.1:Jul 12 08:56:30 uffcom2 kernel: [ 3793.783509] usblp0: removed

   kern.log.1:Jul 16 09:19:08 uffcom2 kernel: [ 5871.363425] usblp0: removed
   kern.log:Jul 20 09:17:22 uffcom2 kernel: [ 5367.939394] usblp0: removed
   kern.log:Jul 21 09:31:54 uffcom2 kernel: [ 2843.359392] usblp0: removed
   kern.log:Jul 22 09:53:59 uffcom2 kernel: [ 8377.334403] usblp0: removed

For instance, consider the last log entry at 09:53:59. The system booted
up at 07:35 today, then I printed some documents before 09:53 and also
some documents later, both from LP command line interface, PDF from
document viewer and email from Thunderbird. The toolbox jobs viewer
showed all the tasks done.

What does it mean usblp0: removed ? Removed from where?

Thanks.

[Bug 162016] Re: cups printjobs unload /dev/usblp0

2008-04-24 Thread Quartz
I'm using Ubuntu Hardy Heron (everything up to date, original install
was beta5 I believe), default detection of the printer (detected
automatically to hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_1020?serial=JL2R4KC), and I confirm
this as NOT being the wrong URL.

I have the exact same problem, HP LJ1200, prints ok from OpenOffice, but
not from Evince.

Running hp-makeuri on the proper usb combo (on my sys, 006:003) yields
the same URL: hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_1020?serial=JL2R4KC.

Even if the reason is not the specified one, the symptoms are valid and
the bug shouldn't be closed.

Is there any log I can provide?

[Bug 162016] Re: cups printjobs unload /dev/usblp0

2008-03-25 Thread Till Kamppeter
The removal of the /dev/usblp0 device is not the reason why some jobs do
not get printed. The device is not needed when printing via HPLIP. The
problem that some files do not get printed is probably another bug.

If you are using CUPS this means in general you should always use the
HPLIP's hp backend (ie: hp:/usb/...) instead of the standard CUPS
usb backend (ie: usb://...).

I use HP1018 with Cups and HPLIP's hp backend (ie: hp:/usb/...) but
I have the same problem. The only way I have to resurrect my printer is
booting Windows an rebooting to Ubuntu.

[Bug 162016] Re: cups printjobs unload /dev/usblp0

2007-11-12 Thread Till Kamppeter
The disconnection of HP printers from the usblp kernel module is done by
HPLIP's hp backend, the backend used by all automatically generated
queues for HPLIP-supported HP printers. It happens also when other HPLIP
tools, like hp-toolbox, access the printer. Printing via the print queue
is not affected by this, but the disconnection leads to other problems,
especially HAL does not see any more when the device is connected or
disconnected, so it cannot disable the print queue while the device is
disconnected, it also breaks automatic print queue setup for the HP
LaserJet 1018 and 1020 due to the automatic firmware upload being done
by an HP tool and so the device already disappears for HAL before an
automatic print queue setup can be done.

To the developers from HP: Is it perhaps possible to still give the full
functionality of the printer via HPLIP but without decoupling the
printer from the usblp kernel module?

[Bug 162016] Re: cups printjobs unload /dev/usblp0

2007-11-12 Thread David Suffield
Sorry, HPLIP uses libusb/usbfs instead of usblp. Libusb uses the
/dev/bus/usb/xxx/xxx device node instead of the /dev/usblp0 device
node.

Since usblp and libusb cannot claim the the same usb device, any HPLIP
device I/O usage (ie: scanning, printing or faxing) will remove usblp
from the /dev/usblp0 device node.

If you are using CUPS this means in general you should always use the
HPLIP's hp backend (ie: hp:/usb/...) instead of the standard CUPS
usb backend (ie: usb://...).

The hp backend will always use the libusb device node. If you try to
use the usb backend the /dev/usblp0 device node may not be
available.

Currently hal_lpadmin calls hp-info and hp-probe which are io intensive
and will interfere with hp-firmware download for the LJ1018 and LJ1020.
Because of this interference HAL will not see these printers at plug-in-
play time and disable the print queue.

The hp-info and hp-probe calls in hal_lpadmin should be replaced with
the hp-makeuri call. The udev sysfile information will provide the usb
bus and device information necessary for the hp-makeuri bbb:ddd
command. Hp-makeuri will return a valid HPLIP uri if the usb device is
supported by HPLIP.

Hp-makeuri is a light weight call that has very little io overhead. The
hp-makeuri command will not interfere with the hp-firmware download.
