Please try if the instruction given at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux- source-2.6.22/+bug/120316/comments/6 will allow gutsy to boot in qemu. I did that, and it did continue to load for a while, but then somewhere in the process, the display server crashes 6 times in 1,5 minutes or so. The crash I mentioned in my previous post only occurs when I use the standard VGA card with Boch extentions as video card.
