[Bug 1634990] Re: Hard Disk Health warning for removed HDD (Ultrabay)

2016-12-04 Thread Bzzz
As there is no option to "remove" a hard disk drive in dolphin or the
usual USB notifier, I unmounted all partitions and sent the device to
sleep (gnome-disks), which causes a spin-down of the drive itself. Then
one can remove the disk in a relatively safe manner.

The message did not appear again after the smartmontools command above,
and it also did not appear after a reboot. So I reckon restarting
smartmoontools via a user-friendly button is enough to get rid of the
annoyance.

[Bug 1634990] Re: Hard Disk Health warning for removed HDD (Ultrabay)

2016-11-02 Thread Robie Basak
I think Christian's suggestion of rebooting was for diagnostics of your
reported bug to help us understand the root cause of the problem, rather
than advice on how to fix the problem generally (we don't know the
details yet). If it's a bug we can fix it, but if nobody affected helps
us diagnose, then it will never be fixed.

Did you tell the system you were removing the drive before you unplugged
it? If not you may be able to write a "1" to
/sys/block/sdb/device/delete, but I'm not sure that works after the
fact. I expect there's nicer interface to do this through the GUI
(Nautilus?) but I don't know what that is.

[Bug 1634990] Re: Hard Disk Health warning for removed HDD (Ultrabay)

2016-10-24 Thread Bzzz
Hi,

thanks for the answer and the insights of how the SMART subsystem works.

Both config files (/etc/default/smartmontools, /etc/smartd.conf) are
untouched. The only thing that (actively) may do something SMART-related
is tlp 0.8.

I ran the service smartmontools restart command and we'll see if this
fixes the error. If it does, I suggest adding a button to the error
message that does this in a more convenient way.

And no, I haven't restarted since the problem occurred, I guess it will
fix it as well. But if I want a system that needs a reboot to fix
basically half of the problems imaginable, I will choose Windows.
According to whatpulse, my uptime record for this laptop is 91 days and
my average uptime is 14 days, which includes multi-reboots on certain
dates because of growing problems with the recent kernels (wrong display
resolution, no WiFi, USB dead, etc). I expect minor problems such as
SMART warnings to be fixable without reboot or relogin.

[Bug 1634990] Re: Hard Disk Health warning for removed HDD (Ultrabay)

2016-10-24 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi,
thank you for your report and your effort to make Ubuntu better.

I found that https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Smartmontools describes
that this is part of smart-notifier.

It doesn't seem to come with much of a config, and the following just calls it
(python script):
/etc/smartmontools/run.d/60smart-notifier

That is triggered whenever smart wants to send a report.

So despite the notifier being a different package the issue is in smart
itself and why it still scans the not available disk.

The default config seems to rescan each invocation.
"DEVICESCAN -d removable -n standby -m root -M exec
/usr/share/smartmontools/smartd-runner"

Did you since then fully reboot or restart to let it rescan?
If not "service smartmontools restart" might help to rescan.

Might you have some disks configured in any of
"/etc/default/smartmontools" or "/etc/smartd.conf"?
