I installed vkeybd from Ubuntu 12.10 (vkeyboard v1.9) and it came with a standard 3 octaves (not an octave and a half). Can you elaborate on what information is missing? vkeybd has a default keyboard map which isn't very efficient. I wrote another one. If you put it in ~/.vkeybdmap it gives you a better keyboard map. @Noam, is possible that you try to reproduce this issue in latest Ubuntu Karmic version?, because has been passed a long time since this report was filled and probably was solved in newer version.
