The Hardy Heron Alpha series is currently under development and contains an updated version of the -intel driver. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . You should be able to test the new -intel driver using the LiveCD. Just to let you know: I switched to -i810 and the problem is not more. Don't know if this is related to -intel driver, but I have same problem. When I shut down my laptop, most of the times I ended up with blank screen and flashing led of HDD in my laptop. I just installed http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/x11/xserver-xorg- video-i810 from hardy. Dependencies was ok. Also tried http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/x11/xserver-xorg-video-intel, but dependencies was not satisfied. Hit the send button too fast. I believe his is a bug in the -intel driver as i was affected by it before.
