[Bug 1667968] Re: Ubuntu 16.10 kernel 4.8.0-39 No network connectivity

2017-03-21 Thread Tomasz Motylewski
I had the same problem with kernel 4.8.0-42. Lubuntu 16.04
No network at all (eth and wifi), touchpad in my Acer E5-521-295T not working
as well. Also a message about system error during one X session.

I have fixed it first by:
apt-get remove linux-image-4.8.0-42-generic
which switched ma to 4.8.0-41 which works OK.

I have then installed again linux-image-4.8.0-42-generic with the same
problem again.

But
apt-get install linux-generic
will install linux-image-4.4.0-66-generic which is not what I want.

[Bug 1667968] Re: Ubuntu 16.10 kernel 4.8.0-39 No network connectivity

2017-03-15 Thread Louis-Michel Raynauld
I had similar issue with kernel 4.8.0-42. No Network connectivity after
boot, even screen resolution was stuck in 4:3.

Had to go back on 4.8.0-41 and run 'sudo apt-get install linux-generic'
that fixed everything

Seems like the previous kernel upgrade failed. So, I scan the apt log to
find some kernel upgrade errors:

Not sure why this upgrade failed exactly, but running 'sudo apt-get
install linux-generic' command seemed to allowed the previous upgrade to
complete manually and fix eveything.

Thank you for reporting Jerry, your report helped me quickly fix my
system. Maybe this can help find the cause of the kernel issue your
having.

[Bug 1667968] Re: Ubuntu 16.10 kernel 4.8.0-39 No network connectivity

2017-02-28 Thread JerryLumpkins
Given that installing the linux-generic package fixed the issue, I'm not
certain how important it is now. I am quite willing to provide more
information, and/or change to different kernels to help resolve this.

In the meantime, I'm now able to use the latest kernel.

I'm not exactly certain why I needed to install the linux-generic
package to get things working. From what I've read, it should have been
the default kernel when I installed Ubuntu originally, but the search
results I found on this topic were a little sketchy. I am unaware of
ever choosing to install the low-latency or RT kernels.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

2017-02-28 Thread JerryLumpkins
After doing the above I did a little more reading, and decided to try
the generic kernel. I installed it by executing:

sudo apt-get install linux-generic

That fixed my networking problems, and I am now able to use the newest
kernel: 4.8.0-39

2017-02-28 Thread JerryLumpkins
I was able to run the report while running the older kernel that allows
network connectivity. I'm not certain that it will provide the
information you need when the issue is not present, but I can try and
provide the same information in the 4.8.0-39 kernel if you require that.

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected yakkety

** Description changed:

My last kernel update changed something that is causing the network
manager to fail to load anything but the lo device.

If I reboot into the previous kernel (4.8.0-38) everything works fine.

I'm not certain that this issue is related to the NetworkManger or the
Kernel, but the bottom line is I have not ethernet when I boot using the
  latest kernel.

This is one of three computers I built a few years back.
It's based on an Asus motherboard: P5G41T-M LX PLUS, BIOS 050210/21/2011
The eth0 NIC is on the motherboard.

Any info you need, I will try and provide.
Any help you might offer would be appreciated.

I run apt-get update followed by apt-get dist-upgrade every day.
This is the first time I've had a serious problem as a byproduct of updating.
