[Bug 1675608] Re: OCSP failure gives "unknown error"

2018-07-15 Thread gf
Hello WhyteHorse,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with tls
authentication in Thunderbird. You made this bug report over a year ago and
there have been several versions of Ubuntu and Thunderbird since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the
ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to
this bug?
If you are, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect BUGNUMBER
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this
particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and Thunderbird better.
G

I ran it just now. It's Ubuntu 16.04. I remember having the same issue
in 14.04.

** Description changed:

When performing tls authentication to an SMTP server which has an
unverified OCSP record, as is the case with all new StartSSL
certificates for about 24hrs, thunderbird reports the following error:

  Sending of the message failed.
The message could not be sent using Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.example.com
for an unknown reason. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings
are correct and try again.

This is very confusing and impossible to troubleshoot. It should report
"The server's SSL certificate failed OCSP validation.

- To reproduce, go get a startssl certificate, add it to an smtp server,
- connect with thunderbird, receive error. In settings, disable ocsp
- verification, and it connects with no error and behaves as expected.
