[Bug 1681566] Re: nvidia-375 DKMS module not recompiled on upgrade to 17.04

2017-11-30 Thread dfg
We still have this issue for our custom drivers.
What about this patch? https://github.com/dell/dkms/issues/17 I think it has
not been applied to Ubunutu's version.

2017-04-13 Thread Brian Murray
If you have a system currently running yakkety or that upgraded to you
yakkety you could look to see how many kernels the modules were built
for e.g. here's a yakkety system of mine:

[ 9:05AM 10517 ] [ bdmurray@impulse:/tmp ]
 $ grep "Building for" /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt-term.log
Building for 4.4.0-66-generic and 4.8.0-41-generic
Building for 4.4.0-66-generic and 4.8.0-41-generic
Building for architecture x86_64
Building for 4.4.0-66-generic and 4.8.0-41-generic

I'm sure there are plenty of apt-term.log files attached to upgrade bug
reports in LP one could also check.

(probably yes, because all postinst are done after all package upgrade,

[Bug 1681566] Re: nvidia-375 DKMS module not recompiled on upgrade to 17.04

2017-04-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package dkms - 2.3-3ubuntu1

---
dkms (2.3-3ubuntu1) zesty; urgency=medium

  * 0013-postinst-Fix-newest-kernel-detection.patch: dkms_common.postinst:  We
were passing a list of kernels to get_newest_kernel(), when it expected a
single kernel as its first argument - the currently running kernel. This
in turn meant that the sometimes (if the first thing in the list was
itself the newest kernel), the wrong kernel was passed into
_get_newest_kernel_debian(). As a result this falsely reported that there
was no 'newest' kernel available and then didn't build modules for it.
Drop the parameter to get_newest_kernel(), and instead rely on
CURRENT_KERNEL being set to $(uname -r). (LP: #1681566)

2017-04-13 Thread Adam Conrad
Hello Jeremy, or anyone else affected,

Accepted dkms into zesty-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dkms/2.3-3ubuntu1 in a
few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed.Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

I tested Laney's patch via the following:

- boot a yakkety desktop virtual machine
- installed virtualbox-dkms
- modified /etc/apt/sources.list for zesty
- installed new dkms package
- edited /usr/lib/dkms/common.postinst
- modified /etc/apt/sources.list for yakkety
- ran do-release-upgrade -d
- [...]
- dkms status

bdmurray@clean-yakkety-amd64:~$ dkms status

virtualbox, 5.1.18, 4.8.0-26-generic, x86_64: installed

Also in /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log we can see:

Setting up virtualbox-dkms (5.1.18-dfsg-1build1) ...^M
Loading new virtualbox-5.1.18 DKMS files...^M
Building for 4.8.0-26-generic 4.10.0-19-generic^M

Notice it is building for two kernels now not one.

[Bug 1681566] Re: nvidia-375 DKMS module not recompiled on upgrade to 17.04

2017-04-12 Thread Iain Lane
With the attached patch the modules are compiled for the right version
for me. It seems like the postinst wasn't working if the passed in
version (from the kernel's postinst.d) happened to be the newest kernel.
I'm not sure why that stopped working. It could be that this code is
meant to return nothing in the newest-kernel case, and some other part
of the code is meant to add the passed-in version to the list of kernels
to build for. I'm not sure.

Please could someone review? If you're comfortable, you can upload
otherwise I can try to do that tomorrow along with forwarding the patch.

The bug needs SRUifying too.

[Bug 1681566] Re: nvidia-375 DKMS module not recompiled on upgrade to 17.04

2017-04-12 Thread Brian Murray
I performed another upgrade without ubuntu-release-upgrader (edit
sources, apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade) and the modules were not
built for the new kernel.

bdmurray@clean-yakkety-amd64:~$ dkms status
virtualbox, 5.1.18, 4.8.0-26-generic, x86_64: installed

Reinstalling linux-headers-4.10.0-19-generic again resolved the issue.

Yes, manually running it causes the modules to be built for the new
kernel.

have triggered the rebuild? It seems like either dkms or this postinst
is not doing the right thing?

Are you able to run it manually?
